Key Aspect
The Scottish Poetry Library is the only purpose built library devoted exclusively to poetry in Europe [possibly the world].
The existing building had been much admired by architects and the general public, but was no longer suitable for the evolving needs of the library.
The project entailed alteration and extension of the ground floor to provide an acoustically separated space, allowing readings, recordings or study groups to take place in parallel with the core library functions.
A more welcoming entrance area was created, including a reading bar and improved retail display for books and pamphlets.
A large outdoor terrace forms the roof of the extension, which enables the mezzanine level to be used for larger readings, book launches and other events.
The extended building assists SPL in carrying forward its mission to bring poetry and people together.
